You guys!!! We’re having a baby!!!!! An actual human one.
We’re still wrapping our minds around the fact that we’re really expecting a little human to join our family late this year after so many years of being labeled as having unexplained infertility. Despite having a few losses during that time, including a very traumatic ectopic pregnancy last year where I was also diagnosed with quite invasive endometriosis. It was this last pregnancy that finally convinced doctors to stop making us “just wait a little longer” because “you’re still young” (while I’m counting down the weeks to 30 which isn’t old but it is getting to an age where conceiving can get harder and harder for some) and write us a referral to a fertility clinic for IVF.
We opted to use The Fertility Centre for our first (and only) attempt because a) it’s very affordable and we thought it would be sensible to try out the most affordable option first b) they only offer low dose rounds and after all the horror stories we’ve heard about the process this was really appealing and c) the staff are all so darn lovely!!! They keep their costs low by having nurse practitioners look after you for the most part and by having the doctors rotate out so you rarely see the same one twice but this didn’t bother me and the continuity of care was amazing. They also keep it a little lower by doing egg retrieval whist awake (just with some gas and valium to help with the pain) which is not the most comfortable experience I’ve ever had but I had more cysts in my ovaries than eggs and unfortunately, they can’t tell they’re in a cyst or collecting an egg until they’re in there. Anyway! They got 3 eggs from 12 follicles and all 3 fertilised (one didn’t fertilise properly though so it was discarded). As it was my first round and I’m under 32 they transferred 1 embryo back 2 days after the egg retrieval and we have the other in storage for just in case. We then started a very anxious 2-week wait which actually went quickly as we sold our house and were in the process of buying our new one amongst all of this (yes I know, we’re absolutely crazy) which ended with a big fat positive test!!!!
Since then we’ve moved house, had a couple of scans and multiple blood tests to confirm the little one took up residence in the correct spot and is a healthy low-risk baby, we weren’t expecting to get all of the results until next week but I had an amazing sonographer yesterday who knew I was anxious given I have a disabled sister and she made sure it was all rushed through with my bloods before our antenatal appointment with the hospital. It doesn’t guarantee things won’t go wrong and we are more anxious than we would be without our history but the hospital has us as a high risk pregnancy automatically because it’s an IVF baby so we have more checks which are very reassuring and now we are as safe as you can ever be told you are in any pregnancy we are so absolutely thrilled we didn’t want to wait longer to share the news!
We’re so excited for all of the firsts and new memories to be made as our little family grows.
There’s a video at the end of the post of the little one moving around.
